Puerto Rico IANE Filing 2025: Deadlines, Extensions & Pro Tips

If you’re a business owner or investor in Puerto Rico with a tax exemption decree, the annual filing season for your Informe Anual de Negocio Exento (IANE) is here. Staying compliant with the Office of Incentives for Businesses (OI) requirements is crucial to maintaining your tax benefits, so let’s break down what you need to know for the 2025 tax year.

Who Needs to File an IANE?

If you have a tax exemption decree under Law No. 60-2019 or any previous incentive laws, you’re required to file an IANE this year. This includes:

  • Resident investors
  • Businesses operating under special laws (like Laws 22-2012, 20-2012, 135-1997, 73-2008)
  • Conduct entities
  • Other exempt businesses

Don’t assume you’re exempt from filing just because your business is small or newly established—if you have a decree, you’re on the hook.

Key Deadlines to Mark on Your Calendar

Deadlines for the IANE aren’t one-size-fits-all. The date in your specific decree always takes precedence, but here are the general rules:

  • General deadlines:
    • 30 days after you file your Puerto Rico income tax return (including extensions)
    • The 15th day of the 11th month after your fiscal year closes
    • November 15, 2025, for most businesses under the Incentives Code
  • Special cases:
    • Individuals: May 15, 2025, or 30 days after your tax return (with extensions)
    • Corporations: July 15, 2025
    • Qualified doctors and other industries: November 15, 2025 (with IANE forms available from August 1, 2025)

Always double-check your decree for a custom deadline—it overrides the general rules.

Need More Time? Here’s How to Get an Extension

You can request an automatic extension for your IANE if you’ve also requested an extension for your income tax return with Hacienda. Just be sure to submit proof of your Hacienda extension when you file the IANE extension request.

  • For those with a May 15, 2025, deadline: You have until June 15, 2025, to request the extension, penalty-free if you meet the requirements.
  • There’s a $105 processing fee for the extension.

Don’t wait until the last minute—extensions require documentation and payment.

Updates: Amendments and New Forms

  • Amendments: If you need to amend a previously filed IANE, you can do so starting May 30, 2025.
  • New Forms: Updated IANE forms for “Qualified Doctors” and “Other Industries” will be available from August 1, 2025.

Stay tuned for these updates if they apply to your business category.

Pro Tips for a Smooth IANE Season

  • If your decree specifies a different deadline, follow that.
  • Keep records of all extension requests and proof of filing.
  • The OI is actively working to make the process smoother and better coordinated with Hacienda.
